Make Money Doing Good: An Introduction to Social Entrepreneurship

One million people in the UK are employed by social enterprises. Social enterprises build homes, run double decker buses and make chocolate. You may have used a social enterprise today without even knowing it.

Charities, public services and not for profit organisations now need to operate more commercially and find entrepreneurial ways to bring in funding. At the same time, many businesses are doing things to improve lives and communities. At what point do these charities and businesses cross over to become social enterprises?

Come along to our workshop for a chance to find out more about starting a social enterprise and learn directly from our panel of local social entrepreneurs about how they are making profit with purpose.

Who will be there?

• Heidi Fisher
• Heidi is a multi-award winning specialist in social enterprise and social impact, having worked with over 2,100 organisations ranging from start-ups to those with over £1 billion of income. Heidi is listed on the WISE100 (2017) as one of the 100 most influential and inspiring women in social enterprise in the UK, and her CIC (Make an Impact) is listed on the NatWest SE100 Index 2019.

• Jacqui Starling
• Lola Stafford Consulting Ltd was created in April 2013 to focus on developing and sustaining social impact activities which contribute to economic wellbeing in communities such as social enterprise start-up programmes, and develops a wide range of youth led projects ranging from bespoke resilience workshops to the Norfolk Police & Crime Commissioner’s Youth Commission.
• The Founder, Jacqui Starling, has experience of working in commercial, public sector and social enterprise environments but her passion lies in creating projects where the outcomes are meaningful, sustainable and tangible. Pet hates are weak tea, insipid red wine and insincere people but her big love is Lola the Stafford wherein lies a tale (or tail!)…..

• Jana Belovicova and Ismat Imman – Kipple UK:
• Kipple’s mission is to challenge the waste generated by university students in the UK by offering a premium quality, rentable starter kit of homeware essentials. The UN estimates that annually, 168 million young adults relocate for study or work — causing over 1.7 billion kilos of waste per year, often consisting of still useable kitchen and bedroom essentials. We aim to achieve a 0% landfill diversion rate where all of the products which are currently being dumped by students, are re-used, refurbished, remanufactured and then recycled if needed.
• The idea is to provide innovative solution to ‘buying and throwing’, allowing people to share and reuse the things that everybody needs. We aim to imbibe the principles of the circular economy and promote responsible consumption, starting with university students in the UK. Our product is a rented starter kit of basic homeware goods, reducing the amount of waste generated by the high turnover of domestic and international students.
• About Jana: Prior to her second Masters in International Social Development at UEA, where she examined the citizenship rights of marginalised communities, Jana has lived and worked in three continents and six countries. Having personally faced the challenges of temporary relocation, Jana oversees product and supply chain development at Kipple, further enabled by her LLM and corporate legal expertise in the infrastructure and technology sectors.
• About Ismat: Ismat graduated with a masters in Environmental Assessment and Management at UEA, after working extensively as a waste consultant with ecologists, businesses and governmental agencies. Having expertly navigated communication between a variety of stakeholders, Ismat is responsible for building partnerships, sales and impact at Kipple.
