Join us for a vibrant afternoon showcasing artwork, live performances, food, poetry and a film screening to mark the end of Refugee Week
World Refugee Day falls on 20 June each year. This year we are also observing Refugee Week as part of a global festival to celebrate the achievements and resilience of refugee communities under the theme of ‘Healing’.
We celebrate the diversity of Hong Kong’s asylum seeker and refugee population, regardless of who they are and where they are from. We celebrate the resilience of those who flee their homes to seek safety, recognizing that healing is an ongoing process that can be made harder by prolonged uncertainties when awaiting their asylum decisions or for a durable solution. They deserve dignified treatment and our compassion.
Features of the event:
- Art exhibition by UNHCR in collaboration with BlessVision Foundation, featuring artwork from a refugee art therapy program and by independent artists
- Grassroots Future will present poetry from this year’s World Poetry Day Poetry Competition (for refugee and asylum seeker writers) on display throughout the premises
- $40 Challenge food tasting by Justice Centre to raise attention to the $40 allowance the community is entitled to each day
- Drama performance by “Our lives matter”
- Short screening of a documentary by students from the University of Hong Kong in collaboration with Grassroots Future, following the lives of several creative talents among the local refugee community
